I love routines. They keep me sane and help me create a quiet, orderly life. Work, household tasks, workouts, and free time are slotted into little compartments in my day.
Routines make me feel secure. Even when travelling, my morning and evening routines keep me grounded. It’s very calming to go through a routine or follow a schedule. Especially when you’re in an unfamiliar place.
One danger of routine is becoming complacent or stagnant. But routines allow me to break out of my comfort zone while I’m feeling my best. For example, I take dance classes once a week. But I have a couple of hours both before and after to prepare for and unwind. I go out with friends on Sundays. But that means my Saturday nights are quiet and I recharge in my room afterwards.
I slot in adventures when I know I have the energy. I can push out of my comfort zone and try new things because I know I have a quiet space to return to. In fact, it’s because I follow a routine that I’m able to branch out and try new things.
